Core Content

Hong Kong’s education goals go beyond examination results. The system values moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development, as well as independent thinking, adaptability and lifelong learning.

Students in Hong Kong normally receive 12 years of school education and take the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education examination after secondary school. Undergraduate degrees have generally been four-year programmes since the 2012/13 academic year, allowing more room for exchange, internships, interdisciplinary learning and service learning.

Post-secondary education in Hong Kong covers sub-degree, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. Programmes generally follow international standards in curriculum design and quality assurance. Before applying, students should check whether a programme is locally recognised and whether it fits future study or employment goals.

Besides academic programmes, Hong Kong also offers vocational and professional education, continuing education, short courses and language programmes. Students can choose routes according to grades, interests, budget and career direction.
